Dolomites Day Tours

The Dolomites are close enough to Venice that you can leave the canals after breakfast, stand beside a green mountain lake under 3,000-metre peaks by late morning, and be back for dinner. Cortina d’Ampezzo is about 160 kilometres north, a little under two hours by motorway and valley road. That short distance is why almost every Dolomites day tour on this site starts in Venice, and why the itineraries look so alike on paper.

They are not all the same day, though. The range is big, the famous lakes and viewpoints are spread across it, and what you can do at each one changes a lot between July and November.

Where the Venice day trips actually go

Most departures take the same road north through the Piave valley and Cadore, and then choose from four places.

Lake Misurina is the stop almost every tour makes, and usually the longest. The lake sits at about 1,750 metres with the Sorapiss massif on one side and the Cadini di Misurina behind it. On a clear day the Tre Cime di Lavaredo appear over the far end. There is a flat path around the shore and several restaurants, which is why tours plan lunch here.

Cortina d’Ampezzo is the town. It hosted the Winter Olympics in 1956 and again in 2026, and you will see Olympic rings on the square. Tours give it anywhere from half an hour to an hour and a half, mostly for a walk along the Corso Italia.

Lago di Braies is the lake from the photographs: emerald water, a wooden boathouse and rowing boats under a sheer wall of rock. It sits further north in South Tyrol, so only some routes include it, and the stop is 45 minutes to three hours depending on the tour.

The Tre Cime di Lavaredo, three rock towers that have become the symbol of the range, are the fourth. Most day trips show them to you from a roadside viewpoint or from Misurina. Walking the loop around them is a separate, longer day that begins from Rifugio Auronzo at the end of a €40 toll road.

Choosing between them

The biggest price difference is the vehicle, not the route. The cheapest trip here, the Best of the Dolomites coach tour from $113, uses a full-size coach and a tour guide. Minivan tours limited to eight guests run from about $170 to $230 and are quicker to get moving at each stop. The private Dolomites and Prosecco day is priced per group.

The next question is whether Lago di Braies matters to you. If it does, choose a route that lists it and check how long you get. The Dolomites, Cortina and Lake Braies small-group trip gives it an hour and a half and includes the entry fee. If a slow afternoon by a lake sounds better than more driving, the Cortina and two lakes day spends more than two hours at Misurina and is the most-reviewed tour on the site.

Not only from Venice

From Lake Garda and Verona the tours go to a different part of the Dolomites. They head north-east into Val di Fassa to the Pordoi Pass, where a cable car climbs to the Sass Pordoi terrace, and then to Ortisei in Val Gardena. The Lake Garda coach tour collects from towns all around the lake. Both run in summer only. When we checked GetYourGuide’s calendar in September 2026, the last Verona date was 2 October and the last Lake Garda dates were in the first half of October.

The season decides more than the tour does

A Dolomites day trip in July and one in late October can follow the same road and feel like two different days.

In high summer the lifts are running. At Misurina you can take the chairlift to Col de Varda or hire a rowing boat, but both stop in mid-September. The road to Lago di Braies is closed to cars without a booked parking space between 9am and 4pm from 1 July to 15 September. The Tre Cime toll road needs an online booking.

In September the crowds thin and the weather is usually steady, and almost everything is still open. In October the larches turn gold, which is the best reason to come, and the season ends in stages. Alta Badia’s lifts close on 4 October, Cortina’s on 18 October, and Val Gardena keeps Seceda and the Alpe di Siusi running until 2 November. The mountain huts close earlier than the lifts. By November the high roads can get snow, the toll road to the Tre Cime is normally closed, and the lakes are the day.

What to bring and what to expect

Plan on nine to ten hours, about four of them in the vehicle. Lunch is almost never included. Misurina is 1,750 metres higher than Venice and noticeably colder, so bring a warm layer even in summer, and a waterproof one from October. Wear shoes you can walk a lakeshore path in. Most tours ask for luggage to be arranged in advance, and several are not suitable for young children or people with back problems, which is listed on each tour page.
