Dolomites in November

November is the month the Dolomites take off. The summer lifts stop, the mountain huts are shut, the high walks are over and the ski season hasn’t started. For about three weeks the range belongs to the people who live there.

That makes it the wrong month for a first visit — and a good one if you have already seen the Dolomites in summer, or if you want the lakes and the villages without anyone else in the photographs. This page covers what closes, what keeps running, and what November has that no other month does.

What closes

By the middle of the month nearly every summer lift has stopped. In 2026 the last ones are Seceda and the Alpe di Siusi on 2 November, the 3 Cime area and Plan de Corones on 8 November and Val di Fassa on 11 November.

The Tre Cime toll road is normally closed from the end of October, so the loop around the three peaks is off the table for most visitors. High passes stay open unless it snows, but they close temporarily when it does. Mountain huts are shut.

From 15 November, winter tyres or snow chains are compulsory on the A22 Brenner motorway and in the municipality of Bolzano regardless of the weather, and elsewhere in South Tyrol whenever there’s snow or ice. If you’re driving yourself, that’s a hire-car conversation to have in advance. On a day tour it’s the operator’s problem.

What stays open

The lakes. Lago di Braies has no access restrictions in winter, the bus from Dobbiaco runs year round, and the lake usually hasn’t frozen by November. Lake Misurina is beside the road and open all year. Both look their best with fresh snow on the peaks above them.

The towns. Cortina d’Ampezzo, Dobbiaco, San Candido and Ortisei are all working towns, not just resorts. November is when they are at their quietest.

The Venice day tours. This is the useful part. When we read GetYourGuide’s calendars in September 2026, the minivan tours from Venice had dates right through November: the Braies, Misurina and Tre Cime view day featured at the top of this page, the Cortina and two lakes day, the Braies and Cortina small-group trip, the drone-video lakes loop and the private Dolomites and Prosecco day.

The tours that had stopped by November were the coach tours — the Venice coach tour ended on 31 October, and the Lake Garda and Verona tours in early October — along with the guided Sorapis hike, the autumn-colours hike and the Seceda outings.

What November has that other months don’t

Routes that change for the season. The Misurina small-group day adds San Candido and Lago di Braies from 15 November, because the Tre Cime area is winding down.

Christmas markets. From 23 November to 6 January, that same tour includes the San Candido Christmas market. Bolzano’s market, one of the best known in Italy, runs from 27 November 2026 to 6 January 2027.

First snow on the lakes. A November lake day with snow on the peaks and no one else on the shore is a different experience from the same lake in August, and it costs the same.

The start of winter. Cortina usually opens its first slopes in late November, and most Dolomiti Superski areas follow in early December. One Venice tour already lists an optional snowmobile ride to Monte Piana from 6 December. Snowshoe walks, hut dinners and sledding start around then too.

Should you go in November?

Go if: you want the lakes and villages empty, you are based in Venice and want one mountain day, you like the idea of a first-snow landscape, or you are travelling in the last week and want Christmas markets.

Don’t go if: you want to ride a cable car to a high viewpoint, walk the Tre Cime loop, eat lunch at a mountain hut, or see the golden larches — which are over by the first week. For those, October is the month, and the autumn overview compares all three.

Practical notes

Cortina’s November averages are around 5°C by day and a couple of degrees below freezing at night, colder at altitude. Days are short: sunset is before five and after that the drive back to Venice is in the dark. Take proper winter layers, waterproof shoes with grip for icy lakeshore paths, and expect an itinerary to change on the day if it snows.
