Auronzo Lake Guide: Walks, Views & Visiting Tips
Plan a visit to Lake Auronzo, also called Lago di Santa Caterina: the 6 km lakeside walk, parking, viewpoints, the Monte Agudo chairlift, family activities and how to pair it with Tre Cime and Misurina.
Lake Auronzo, also called Lago di Santa Caterina, is one of the easiest scenic stops in the eastern Dolomites. It runs along the valley floor beside Auronzo di Cadore, with forested slopes and Dolomite peaks behind the town. You need no reservation, no hard hike and no long detour: the main lakeside circuit is about 6 km, mostly flat and fine for families.

It has none of the fame of Lago di Braies or Lago di Sorapis, and that is part of its appeal. If you are staying in Auronzo it makes an easy evening walk. If you are on a day trip, combine it with Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Misurina, Monte Agudo, Cortina d’Ampezzo or the Cadore valleys. Several Venice day tours stop here on the way to Lake Misurina.
The sections below cover the lake walk, viewpoints, parking, family activities, how long to spend and how the lake fits a wider Dolomites trip.

Is Lake Auronzo worth visiting?
Yes, if you are already in the eastern Dolomites. I would not cross the whole region just to see it. But if you are staying in Auronzo di Cadore, Misurina, Cortina, Dobbiaco or the Cadore valleys, it makes a useful easy stop.
It suits a day without another big hike. After Tre Cime, Sorapis or Cinque Torri, a flat lakeside walk is often exactly what your legs want.
Where is Lake Auronzo?
The lake lies right beside the town of Auronzo di Cadore, which stretches along the valley below the eastern Dolomites and is one of the gateways to Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Many visitors drive straight through on the way to Misurina or Tre Cime and never stop.
The lake sits below the town and shows you the Dolomites from the valley floor, a very different view from the high mountain scenery farther north.
Lago di Auronzo or Lago di Santa Caterina?
They are the same lake. You will see both names on maps, local signs, accommodation listings and tourism websites. “Lago di Auronzo” is the easier name for travellers; “Lago di Santa Caterina” is widely used locally.
What is Lake Auronzo like?
The lake is artificial, created by a dam across the Ansiei River. It is long and narrow, so the scenery changes gradually as you walk: at one end the town rises above the shore, at the other the forest and mountains take over.
The water often looks green or emerald in the right light. It is quieter than the famous postcard lakes and feels like a place local people use as much as visitors do.
The Lake Auronzo walk
The local tourism office’s route around the lake is about 6 km. It describes the walk as panoramic, mostly flat, suitable for families and largely on a well-beaten unpaved path.
Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for the full circuit. Add time for photographs, a picnic, the playgrounds, a pedal boat or a drink.
Where to start the walk
The tourism office suggests parking near the end of Via Zardus, where there are two larger car parks: one by the lakefront near Bar Bucintoro and another across the bridge on the right. From there you are close to the Transacqua bridge, the first viewpoint on the route.
Transacqua bridge
The bridge gives you a broad view across the lake straight away, and it is one of the easiest places for photographs without walking far. If you only have 20 or 30 minutes, this spot already gives you a good sense of the lake.
Lakeside path
From the bridge, continue towards Chalet Stella Alpina. The route then leaves the paved road for a broader unpaved path through the trees, which gives welcome shade on warm days. There are benches and picnic tables along parts of the route.
Wooden bridge viewpoint
The wooden bridge between the two shores is one of the most photogenic spots on the circuit, with another easy view across the water. You can also cross it to cut the walk short and head back. That helps if you have young children, the weather turns, someone gets tired or you only have an hour.
Santa Caterina dam
If you continue the full circuit, you reach the Santa Caterina dam. The quiet lakefront path gives way to the engineering that made the lake, and the drop below the dam is impressive. After crossing it, the route returns along the opposite shore.
Sandy beach and lakeside recreation
Near the end of the circuit you come back to the more developed shoreline, with a small equipped sandy beach and a wooden boardwalk. This side suits families who want to spend time by the water, not just walk. In summer there are pedal boats and other small rental facilities.
How difficult is the Lake Auronzo walk?
Easy, and far less demanding than the famous Dolomites hikes. You do not need hiking poles, special equipment, strong fitness or mountain experience. Comfortable walking shoes are enough in dry weather. Because the path is not fully paved, trainers with some grip beat smooth sandals.
Is the walk suitable for children?
Yes, and that is one of the main reasons to come. The route is fairly flat, easy to shorten, close to town, near playgrounds and recreation areas, and much less exposed than a mountain trail. With very young children you do not need to finish the circuit: a short stretch along the lake plus time at the playground may make a better day.
Is the walk suitable for pushchairs?
Some sections are much easier than others. Parts of the route are unpaved, so a sturdy pushchair copes better than a small city stroller. If you need a smooth surface throughout, stay on the developed sections near the town.
How long should you spend at Lake Auronzo?
30 to 45 minutes
Enough for one viewpoint, a short lakeside walk and photographs.
1.5 to 2 hours
Enough for the full circuit at a comfortable pace.
2.5 to 3 hours
Time for the full walk plus a picnic, the playground, a pedal boat and several photo stops.
Half a day
Good if you are planning a relaxed family day or a rest day between big hikes.
Best time of day
Morning
Quieter paths, softer light and cooler temperatures for walking.
Late afternoon
Relaxed walking, warm light on the slopes around the lake, and dinner in Auronzo afterwards.
Midday
Still fine, since the route is easy and some sections run through shade. In summer, midday is busier and hotter.
Best time of year
June
Green scenery and fewer visitors than in high summer.
July and August
All the summer facilities and family activities are running. These are also the busiest months.
September
One of the best periods. The weather is often still pleasant while crowds ease. Note that the Monte Agudo lifts closed for the season on 13 September in 2026.
October
Good for autumn colour and quiet walks. Expect cooler temperatures and most seasonal activities closed. In 2026 the shuttle bus from Dobbiaco to Rifugio Auronzo stopped running after 11 October, so from then on you need a car or a tour to reach Tre Cime from this side.
Winter
The lake looks completely different. Walking conditions depend on snow and ice, so treat it as a winter landscape, not a summer lakeside stroll. For the wider seasonal picture, see our guide to the best time to visit the Dolomites.
Lake Auronzo and Tre Cime in one day
Yes, and it is one of the most logical pairings, but the order matters. If you plan to hike the full Tre Cime circuit, do that first. Then stop at Lake Auronzo later for an easy walk, dinner, sunset or a stroll to loosen your legs. Do not spend two hours walking around the lake before Tre Cime unless you have planned a late start.
Without a car, the guided Tre Cime di Lavaredo tour from Misurina ($145, 5.0/5 from 34 reviews) takes you around the peaks in about five hours. From Venice, the Lake Braies and Tre Cime day trip ($110, 4.8/5 from 51 reviews) covers Tre Cime and Lago di Braies in one day. Our Tre Cime di Lavaredo hike guide covers the route, toll road and parking.
Lake Auronzo and Misurina
Another natural pairing. A good route is Auronzo di Cadore → Lake Auronzo → Misurina → Tre Cime area, or the reverse. Lake Auronzo is a low, broad valley lake; Misurina sits much higher in an alpine setting, so the two do not feel repetitive. The Cortina and two lakes day trip from Venice ($106, 4.9/5 from 1,184 reviews) follows this road, with a short photo stop at the Auronzo dam, more than two hours at Lake Misurina and an hour in Cortina. Our Lago di Braies or Lake Misurina guide helps if you are choosing a lake for a day trip.
Lake Auronzo and Cortina
Auronzo is an easy addition to a Cortina-based trip on a day when you are driving towards Misurina, Tre Cime or the Cadore valleys. A long detour from Cortina just for the lake is not worth it, but as part of that route it fits well.
Monte Agudo above Auronzo
Monte Agudo is one of the best reasons to stay in Auronzo instead of driving through. Two summer chairlifts climb from Taiarezze (900 m) above the town, via Malon, to Rifugio Monte Agudo at 1,573 m. From the top you look over Auronzo, the lake, the surrounding Dolomites and Tre Cime in the distance, a very different view of the lake from the one on the shore.
2026 summer lift dates
The lifts open in June and close in September. In 2026 the last public day was Sunday 13 September, and the whole area has been closed since. The Taiarezze chairlift ran from 9:00 to 18:00 and the Malon chairlift from 9:00 to 17:40. The operator warns that the lifts can close on some weekdays at the start and end of the season, so check the official page before you go next summer.
Monte Agudo Panorama Experience
The Panorama Experience ticket takes you from Taiarezze to the summit. In summer 2026 it cost €20 return or €15 one way for an adult, with reduced fares for young people and seniors. The two chairlifts take a little over 15 minutes to the upper panoramic area. For families it makes a good alternative to a full mountain hike.
Fun Bob
Monte Agudo also has a summer Fun Bob alpine coaster, a toboggan on a rail that starts at the top station of the first chairlift. In 2026 it ran from 10:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 18:00. It stops in rain; tickets can be used the next day but are not refunded.
Together, the chairlift, the Fun Bob and a lake walk give families one scenic outing, one fun ride and an easy walk without a long hiking day.

Shows the shape of the lake and how it was made.
Town-side shore
Best for easy evening photography.
Is Lake Auronzo better than Lago di Braies?
No, but they suit different trips. Braies is a destination lake in its own right. Auronzo works better as a relaxed walk, a family stop, a rest day, an evening outing or an add-on to Tre Cime.
Choose Braies if the lake is one of the main reasons for your trip; our Lago di Braies guide covers access and parking. Choose Auronzo if you want something easy and close by while you are already in the area.
Lake Auronzo or Lago di Misurina?
Choose Auronzo if you want a longer easy walk, you are staying in Auronzo di Cadore, family recreation matters or you prefer a lower-altitude lake.
Choose Misurina if you are heading to Tre Cime, want more dramatic high-mountain scenery or only have time for a short stop.
Doing both in one day is easy. Our guide to the best lakes in the Dolomites compares them with the others.
Lake Auronzo or Lago di Dobbiaco?
Both are relaxed lakes, not headline destinations, so pick the one nearer your route. Choose Auronzo if you are around Cortina, Misurina or Cadore. Choose Dobbiaco if you are around Braies, San Candido or the northern side of Tre Cime.
Can you swim in Lake Auronzo?
Do not plan on it as a swimming lake. The main activities are walking, relaxing by the shore, pedal boats, canoeing, fishing and family recreation. Designated areas and local conditions can change, so check the signs on the day if getting into the water matters to you.
Can you kayak or canoe?
Auronzo’s official tourism information lists canoeing among the water activities. If you want to bring your own boat or hire one, check the current local rules and rental availability.
Fishing
Fishing is allowed, but permits and local rules apply, and a general Italian fishing licence does not automatically cover it. Ask locally before you fish.
Where to stay in Auronzo di Cadore
Auronzo suits you if you want lower accommodation prices than Cortina in some periods, easy access to Tre Cime, family facilities, lake views and a quieter town. It works best with a car. Search all stays in Auronzo di Cadore on Booking.com to see what is free on your dates.
If you want nightlife, luxury shopping and a more polished resort, Cortina d’Ampezzo suits you better. To sleep at the foot of the Tre Cime toll road, look at stays in Misurina. Our guide to the best towns in the Dolomites compares the bases.
Is Auronzo a good base for the Dolomites?
Yes, for the eastern Dolomites. Tre Cime, Misurina, the Cadini di Misurina, Monte Agudo and the Cadore valleys are all close. It is less useful for Seceda, Alpe di Siusi and Val Gardena, which are too far west for easy day trips.

Final planning advice
Lake Auronzo is not the lake most travellers cross the Dolomites to see, and that makes it useful. There is no access system, no difficult trail and no need to arrive before everyone else. Walk around the lake, shorten the route if you like, stop for a picnic and carry on towards Misurina or Tre Cime.
If you are staying in Auronzo, use the lake again and again: for an evening walk, a rest day, a family outing or an easy photography stop. For a higher view, take the Monte Agudo chairlift when it is running. Leave the comparison with Braies aside and come here for an easy Dolomites day with very little planning.
