Dolomites in November: Is It Worth Visiting?
Visiting the Dolomites in November? See what stays open, where you can still walk, when the ski lifts open, what weather to expect and whether November is worth it.
November is the most awkward month to visit the Dolomites if you want the classic summer or winter trip.
Check Availability
The main hiking season is over and most mountain huts are closed. Many cable cars stop in the first days of the month, and the full ski season has not started yet.
That does not make November a bad time to visit. It makes it a very specific kind of trip. If you want quiet valleys, short walks, photography, road trips when the roads are clear and perhaps the first snow on the peaks, November can be beautiful. If your plan rests on Tre Cime, Seceda, hut-to-hut hiking, the Sella Ronda or a full week of skiing, choose another month.
The biggest mistake is treating November as a cheaper October or an early December. It is neither.
Dolomites in November at a glance
Best for:
- quiet travel
- photography
- short walks
- viewpoints you can drive to
- lakes
- town-based stays
- spa hotels
- first-snow scenery
- spontaneous trips when the forecast is good
Main drawbacks:
- most summer lifts are closed
- many mountain huts are closed
- high trails can have snow and ice
- daylight is short
- some restaurants and hotels close between seasons
- the main ski season has not started for most of the month
Is November a good time to visit the Dolomites?
It can be. For a first Dolomites trip, though, pick November only if the off-season mood itself appeals to you.
A first-time visitor usually pictures one of two Dolomites:
Summer Dolomites
- hiking
- green meadows
- mountain huts
- cable cars
- Tre Cime
- Seceda
- lakes
- long road trips
Winter Dolomites
- skiing
- snow-covered villages
- Christmas atmosphere
- winter lifts
- groomed slopes
November sits between them. You can get:
- the last autumn colour in the forests
- bare larches
- first snow
- low cloud
- empty roads
- dramatic mountain light
You lose much of the infrastructure that makes the region easy to explore.
Early November vs late November
This split matters more in November than in most months.
Early November
Early November still has a few traces of the summer season. A handful of the bigger summer lifts run into the first days of the month. The dates shift slightly each year; for 2026 they are:
- Seceda: to 2 November
- Ortisei–Alpe di Siusi: to 2 November
- Siusi–Alpe di Siusi: to 2 November
- Col Raiser: to 1 November
- Sass Pordoi cable car (Val di Fassa): to 1 November
- Plan de Corones summer lifts: to 8 November
- 3 Zinnen summer lifts: to 8 November
The Dolomiti Supersummer season, which covers the lift network’s summer operations, ends on 8 November 2026. That makes the first weekend of November very different from the middle of the month. Check the operator’s page for the year you travel.
Early November is best for
- the last lift-assisted walks
- autumn photography
- short hikes
- valleys and lakes
- scenic drives
- quiet stays
Even then, do not assume every mountain hut next to a running lift is open.
Mid-November
This is the real off-season. Most summer lifts are closed and the winter lifts have generally not opened. High trails may have snow or ice, and many seasonal hotels, huts and restaurants take a break before the ski season.
Mid-November works for
- quiet town stays
- valley walks
- road trips when the roads are clear
- photography
- the cafés, spas and restaurants that stay open
- spontaneous travel based on the forecast
Mid-November does not work well for
- lift-assisted hiking
- hut-to-hut routes
- serious ski holidays
- rigid itineraries
- long high-altitude hikes
Late November
Late November starts to turn towards winter, and a few ski areas open in the last days of the month. For the 2026/27 winter, Dolomiti Superski lists these opening dates:
- Plan de Corones: from 28 November 2026
- Val di Fiemme / Obereggen: from 28 November 2026
- San Martino di Castrozza / Passo Rolle: from 28 November 2026
Several larger areas, including Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Val di Fassa and Arabba/Marmolada, are scheduled to start their main winter season on 4 December 2026.
So even in late November, do not assume the full Dolomiti Superski network is running. If skiing is the main reason for your trip, December, January or February is safer.
What is the weather like?
November weather is variable. You can get:
- crisp sunny days
- rain in the valleys
- frost
- low cloud
- the first heavy snowfalls
- cold, clear mornings
- snow at altitude with bare roads lower down
November is colder than October, but the bigger issue is that conditions sit between seasons. A trail that is easy in October can turn slippery or icy. A road that is completely clear one week can need winter equipment after the next snowfall.
Does it snow in November?
Yes. Snow becomes more likely at altitude as the month goes on, but that does not mean every valley is under deep snow. November often looks like a patchwork:
- green or brown valley floors
- golden or bare larches
- white peaks
- icy shaded paths
- dry roads lower down
That in-between look can be excellent for photography. It is less useful if you expect reliable ski conditions.
Can you hike in the Dolomites in November?
Yes, but keep the hiking conservative. Think:
- valley walks
- lakeside walks
- lower forest routes
- short panoramic trails
- routes where you can turn back easily
Do not assume a classic summer route is still suitable. High-altitude trails can have:
- snow
- ice
- frozen mud
- short daylight
- closed huts
- closed lifts
The trail is still there, so judge it by whether the conditions match your experience and equipment.
Is Tre Cime a good idea in November?
Not as a normal summer hike. The seasonal shuttle from Dobbiaco has ended by then (in 2026 it stopped on 11 October), the toll road up to Rifugio Auronzo is normally closed from the end of October, and winter conditions can affect both the trail and the approach.
If Tre Cime is your main reason for travelling, choose July to September for hiking, or winter for snow scenery with proper winter planning. November is too changeable to build a long-haul trip around the classic circuit. Our Tre Cime di Lavaredo hike guide covers the summer route.
Is Seceda open in November?
Only at the very start of the month. In 2026 the Ortisei–Furnes–Seceda lifts are scheduled to run until 2 November. After that the summer lifts close until winter operations begin.
So a trip on 1 November and a trip on 10 November are completely different. If Seceda is essential, check the exact lift date for your year before booking.
Is Alpe di Siusi open in November?
The main summer lifts from Ortisei and Siusi run into the first days of November; in 2026, until 2 November. After that, the plateau is much harder to visit for ordinary sightseeing until the winter season begins.
You can still visit the wider area, but do not plan a summer-style cable-car day in mid-November.
Is Lago di Braies worth visiting in November?
Yes, if the road and the weather are good. Braies is one of the easier famous Dolomites sights to visit outside the lift season, because you do not need a cable car.
The summer traffic controls ended in mid-September, so access is no longer the issue. Your checks become:
- snow
- ice
- cold
- short daylight
- fewer services
Our Lago di Braies guide covers parking and the walk around the lake.
Can you walk around the lake?
Possibly. The full circuit can be slippery with snow or ice on it. If conditions are poor, walk only the easier shore sections. Do not force the full loop just because it is usually described as easy.
Are the boats operating?
No. The rowing-boat season ends at the start of November; in 2026 the last day was 1 November. After that, Braies is a place to look and walk, not to row.
Is Lago di Misurina worth visiting?
Yes. Misurina is another good November stop because you can drive right up to it, and it can look beautiful with early snow on the peaks around it.
The lake may start to freeze, depending on the weather. Never walk onto lake ice unless it has been officially declared safe.
Is Cortina worth visiting in November?
Yes, with the right expectations. Cortina is one of the best November bases because it stays a real town even when the lifts are between seasons. You can still use it for:
- restaurants
- cafés
- shopping
- road trips
- lower walks
- Misurina
- scenic viewpoints
- spa stays
Cortina’s summer lifts have closed by November (in 2026, the Lagazuoi cable car closed on 18 October), and winter operations start later. Treat Cortina as a base for the town and road trips, not for lifts.
Day trips from Venice still run in November. The small-group Lake Misurina and Cortina day trip ($229, 4.7/5 from 621 reviews) keeps Cortina and Misurina in its November route and adds San Candido and Lago di Braies from 15 November. The Venice day trip with Cortina and two lakes ($106, 4.9/5 from 1,184 reviews) runs the same route as in summer, with the lifts and boats closed. Our Dolomites in November tours page compares every day tour with November dates.
Is Val Gardena worth visiting in November?
Early November can work, especially during the last days of the summer lifts. Mid-November is much quieter.
Val Gardena’s summer lifts close at the start of the month (on 2 November in 2026), and the 2026/27 winter lift season starts on 4 December 2026. That leaves a long gap.
Choose Val Gardena in November if you want:
- quiet villages
- valley walks
- photography
- spa hotels
- the restaurants that stay open
Do not choose it for normal Seceda and Sella Ronda access.
Is Dobbiaco a good November base?
Yes. From Dobbiaco you can reach several places by road without relying on lifts. Good November options include:
- Lago di Dobbiaco
- Lago di Braies
- Lago di Landro
- San Candido
- valley walks
It is also on the railway, which makes it a useful base without a car.
Best places to visit in November
1. Cortina d’Ampezzo
The best all-round town base.
2. Lago di Braies
Excellent for quiet photography and short walks.
3. Lago di Misurina
Easy road access and big mountain scenery.
4. Lago di Dobbiaco
Good for a low, easy walk.
5. San Candido
Useful for cafés, town life and low-level walking.
6. Val di Funes
Excellent for photography if the roads are clear.
7. Ortisei
A good quiet village base, especially in the first days of the month when the lifts may still run.
Best November walks
Keep the route simple. Good options include:
- the Lago di Braies shoreline
- the Lago di Dobbiaco circuit
- village walks around San Candido
- lower Val Gardena paths
- valley trails around Cortina
- short forest walks
- easy lake circuits
Pick the exact route after checking the day’s conditions.
Are mountain huts open?
Mostly no. By November the normal summer hut season is over. A few huts or restaurants you can drive to may stay open, but do not plan a hike around finding food or shelter at a rifugio. Carry what you need.
Are cable cars open?
A few run in the first days of November. In 2026 these include:
- Seceda: to 2 November
- Alpe di Siusi lifts: to 2 November
- Plan de Corones summer lifts: to 8 November
- 3 Zinnen summer lifts: to 8 November
After that, most of the region is in the gap before the ski season.
Can you ski in November?
Only at the very end of the month, in a few areas. For 2026/27, some areas are scheduled to open on 28 November, but most of the famous ski regions open in early December.
Even where lifts open in late November, expect early-season skiing:
- fewer runs
- coverage that depends on snowmaking
- limited connections
- opening dates that can move with conditions
If you want a full ski holiday, wait until December or later.
Is the Sella Ronda open in November?
Not as a normal ski circuit for most of the month. The main Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Val di Fassa and Arabba/Marmolada winter seasons start in early December (4 December in 2026).
For driving, whether the passes are open depends on snow and the live road conditions. Do not assume the classic summer road loop is practical after snowfall.
Driving in November
Driving can still be one of the best ways to see the Dolomites in November, but you need to check:
- current road conditions
- snowfall
- whether the passes are open
- winter tyre and chain rules
- daylight
From 15 November, winter tyres or snow chains are compulsory on the A22 Brenner motorway and in Bolzano, whatever the weather. A dry, sunny November day can be excellent for a road trip; after snowfall, the same route can be a different drive. Our Driving the Dolomites guide covers the main routes and passes.
Are mountain passes open?
Some stay open. Others can close temporarily, or for the winter, because of snow. Never plan a November route over a high pass without checking live road information that morning, especially for:
- Passo Giau
- Passo Pordoi
- Passo Sella
- Passo Gardena
- Passo Falzarego
How much daylight is there?
Much less than in summer. In November, plan carefully around:
- sunrise
- sunset
- driving time
- your turnaround time on walks
Do not start a long walk in the early afternoon just because it would be fine in July. Carry a headlamp even on simple walks if there is any chance of getting back near dusk.
Photography in November
This is one of November’s strongest arguments. The month can bring:
- first snow on the limestone peaks
- bare forests
- the last golden larches
- fog in the valleys
- dramatic low cloud
- empty viewpoints
- soft, low-angle light
You can get a scene that looks like autumn and winter at once.
Good photography areas
- Val di Funes
- Lago di Braies
- Lago di Misurina
- Cortina
- the Passo Falzarego area when the roads are clear
- Dobbiaco
Is November crowded?
No. It is one of the quietest times of the year, and for clear reasons. Many visitors stay away because:
- the lifts are closed
- the huts are closed
- the weather is unpredictable
- skiing has not started
The quiet is an advantage only if you are comfortable with fewer services.
Is November cheaper?
Often, yes. Accommodation can cost less than in peak summer or winter. There can also be less of it, because some hotels close between seasons. Do not assume every property in a summer guide is open in November; check directly.
What should you pack?
For November:
- waterproof outer layer
- warm insulation
- hat
- gloves
- sturdy waterproof footwear
- warm socks
- sunglasses
- headlamp
- water
- snacks
- power bank
If snow or ice is possible on your walk, you may need more equipment. Traction devices are no substitute for choosing a suitable route.
Early-November 3-day itinerary
Day 1: Ortisei / Seceda
If you are there on 1 or 2 November and the lift is running, use the last of the summer access.
Day 2: Lago di Braies + Dobbiaco
Keep the day flexible.
Day 3: Cortina + Misurina
Stick to scenery you can reach by road.
This is the most active version of a November trip.
Mid-November 3-day itinerary
Day 1: Cortina
Explore the town and the lower viewpoints.
Day 2: Braies + Dobbiaco
Use the clearest day.
Day 3: Misurina or a scenic road trip
Choose based on the road conditions.
Do not build this itinerary around cable cars.
Late-November 3-day itinerary
Day 1: Cortina or San Candido
A day in town.
Day 2: A lake you can drive to
Braies, Misurina or Dobbiaco, depending on conditions.
Day 3: An early ski area or a short winter walk
Only if the ski area is officially open and conditions allow.
Late November is when winter becomes possible, but it is not guaranteed.
November vs October
Choose October if:
- hiking matters
- autumn colour is important
- you want more lifts
- you want more huts open
Choose November if:
- quiet matters most
- you like the in-between landscape
- you are flexible
- you do not mind closed facilities
For most first-time visitors, October is easier. Our Dolomites in October guide covers that month, and the Dolomites in autumn guide compares September, October and November.
November vs December
Choose November if:
- you want quiet off-season travel
- you are not coming to ski
- you are happy with some uncertainty
Choose December if:
- winter atmosphere matters
- skiing matters
- Christmas markets and festive towns appeal
- you want more winter lifts running
Should you book a November trip far in advance?
Be cautious. November works best when you can react to the forecast. If you are already travelling in northern Italy, Austria or Bavaria, a Dolomites detour on a good-weather November day can be excellent. For a long-haul trip planned months ahead, September, October or winter gives you a more predictable trip.
Frequently asked questions
Is November a good time to visit the Dolomites?
It can be, but it is off-season. November is best for quiet travel, photography, scenery you can drive to and short walks, not for classic hiking or a full ski holiday.
Are the cable cars open in November?
A few summer lifts run in the first days of November. In 2026 Seceda and the Alpe di Siusi close on 2 November and the last ones, at Plan de Corones and in the 3 Zinnen area, on 8 November.
Is Seceda open in November?
Only at the very start. In 2026 the Ortisei–Furnes–Seceda lifts are scheduled to run until 2 November.
Is Alpe di Siusi open in November?
The main summer cable cars from Ortisei and Siusi run until 2 November in 2026.
Can you hike Tre Cime in November?
Not as a normal summer hike. The shuttle has stopped, the toll road is normally closed from the end of October, and the trail and approach can be wintry.
Can you visit Lago di Braies?
Yes. It is one of the easier famous sights to visit without the summer lifts.
Are the Braies boats running?
No. The boat season ends at the start of November; in 2026 the last day was 1 November.
Can you ski in November?
A few ski areas open at the very end of November, but the full Dolomites winter network is not yet running.
When does skiing start in 2026?
Plan de Corones, Val di Fiemme/Obereggen and San Martino di Castrozza/Passo Rolle list 28 November 2026 as their opening date. Several other major areas open on 4 December 2026.
Is November cheaper?
Often, but some hotels and restaurants close between seasons.
Does it snow in November?
Yes, especially at altitude, but snow cover in the valleys is not guaranteed.
Final planning advice
November is worth visiting only if the quiet, in-between mood appeals to you. Do not go expecting July hiking at a lower price, or January skiing a month early.
Go for:
- quiet valleys
- short walks
- lakes
- photography
- empty roads
- the chance of the first snow on the peaks
The first few days of the month still have some summer lifts. Mid-November is the quietest stretch. The last days turn towards winter, with a few ski areas opening from 28 November in 2026.
For a first Dolomites trip, September or early October is easier. For a flexible traveller who enjoys the mountains between seasons, November can be a rewarding month. Check lift and road dates for your exact days before you go, because they change every year.
