Dolomites in October: Weather, Hiking, Roads & What Is Open
Visiting the Dolomites in October? See what stays open, where to hike, which lifts still run, how road conditions change and the best October itineraries.
October can be a beautiful time to visit the Dolomites, but it is not just a quieter version of summer.
Check Availability
The first week of October can still feel like late hiking season. Many lifts are running, mountain roads are open, autumn colour is developing and popular places are much calmer than in August.
By the final week of the month, the trip can look completely different. More lifts and mountain huts have closed, daylight is shorter and snow or ice at altitude becomes much more likely.
That is why the most useful question is not just:
“Are the Dolomites good in October?”
It is:
“Which part of October are you visiting, and what do you want to do?”
If you want a road trip, photography, lakes and shorter walks, October can be excellent.
If your priority is a long list of famous high-altitude hikes, September is easier.
Dolomites in October at a glance
Best for:
- autumn colour
- scenic drives
- photography
- fewer crowds
- short and medium hikes
- lakes
- quieter towns
- flexible road trips
Main drawbacks:
- lift closures increase through the month
- mountain huts begin closing
- high trails can receive snow
- daylight is shorter
- seasonal buses become less frequent
- some famous summer itineraries no longer work normally
A simple October rule
If you are visiting in early October, you can still plan around hiking.
If you are visiting in mid-October, combine hiking with road-trip days.
If you are visiting in late October, plan a scenic road trip first and treat high hiking as a bonus if conditions allow.
Is October a good time to visit the Dolomites?
Yes, for the right kind of trip.
October is one of the best months for travellers who care about atmosphere more than maximum infrastructure.
You lose some convenience compared with summer, but gain:
- much quieter trails
- easier parking at many sights
- cooler walking weather
- lower-angle light
- autumn forests
- fewer tour groups
- less pressure to start every day before sunrise
It is particularly good for photographers and travellers who enjoy driving between viewpoints more than completing one long hike every day.
The mistake is booking October and expecting every July experience to work exactly the same way. Our Dolomites in autumn guide compares October with September and November if your dates are still open.
What is the weather like in October?
October is a transition month.
Valleys can still have mild, sunny afternoons, while ridges above 2,000 metres may already feel wintry.
You should be prepared for:
- cold mornings
- mild sunshine at lower elevations
- frost
- strong temperature differences between sun and shade
- rain
- early snow at altitude
- fast-changing mountain conditions
Do not rely only on the weather forecast for Venice, Verona, Bolzano or another nearby city.
A forecast at valley level can look perfectly comfortable while a ridge or pass is windy, icy or covered in fresh snow.
Early October
Often the easiest period.
You may still get long stretches of stable autumn weather with good hiking conditions.
Mid-October
More variable.
This is when fresh snow at altitude becomes increasingly relevant, even if it melts quickly.
Late October
Expect genuinely autumn-to-winter conditions.
A sunny afternoon can still be beautiful, but high hiking plans should remain flexible.
Does it snow in the Dolomites in October?
Yes, it can.
Snow in October does not necessarily mean the Dolomites are under permanent winter cover. Early snowfall may melt again, especially lower down.
The problem for hikers is that even a small amount of snow or overnight ice can make:
- shaded paths slippery
- exposed sections more serious
- route markings harder to follow
- steep descents less comfortable
This matters particularly on trails that are easy in dry summer conditions but include narrow or exposed terrain.
Do not decide whether a trail is safe based only on its normal summer difficulty rating.
What is open in the Dolomites in October 2026?
Quite a lot remains open at the start of October, but operating dates vary sharply by area.
The most important thing to understand is that there is no single Dolomites closing date.
Cortina d’Ampezzo
The published 2026 summer lift season in Cortina runs until 18 October 2026.
Individual lift dates differ.
For example:
- Falzarego-Lagazuoi cable car: through 18 October
- 5 Torri chairlift: through 11 October
- some other lifts close earlier
This makes Cortina much easier to use in the first half of October than at the end of the month.
Val Gardena
Val Gardena has some of the longest-running autumn lift access.
The Ortisei-Furnes-Seceda connection is scheduled through 2 November 2026.
That makes Seceda one of the strongest famous Dolomites viewpoints for an October trip.
Alpe di Siusi
The Ortisei-Alpe di Siusi lift also runs into early November in 2026.
This gives the western Dolomites an advantage for travellers visiting in the second half of October.
Alta Badia
The published regional summer lift season ends 4 October 2026.
That does not mean the valleys close, but your lift-assisted hiking options change quickly after the first weekend.
Arabba and Marmolada
The published 2026 summer season also ends 4 October.
Again, roads and villages remain accessible, but summer lift infrastructure becomes much more limited.
3 Zinnen / Three Peaks region
Some summer lift operations continue into early November, but Tre Cime access itself depends on the seasonal road and transport systems.
In 2026 the Dobbiaco-Rifugio Auronzo shuttle ran until 11 October; the season is now over.
If Tre Cime is essential to your trip, check the exact access situation shortly before travelling.
Is Seceda open in October?
Yes, for much of the month in 2026.
The Ortisei-Furnes-Seceda lifts are scheduled through 2 November 2026, with shorter operating hours from 12 October onwards.
That makes Seceda one of the most reliable high-viewpoint options for an October itinerary.
However, lift operation does not automatically mean perfect hiking conditions.
Val Gardena specifically recommends checking snow conditions in late autumn, and mountain huts may be closed even while the lift is still operating. Our Seceda and Val Gardena autumn page covers the lifts and the tours that reach the ridge.
Why Seceda works well in October
You can get high into the mountains without committing to a long climb from the valley.
That allows you to:
- visit the famous ridge
- take a shorter panoramic walk
- turn back easily if conditions deteriorate
- avoid relying on a long full-day route
For October, that flexibility is valuable.
Is Tre Cime open in October?
Sometimes, but do not treat it like a guaranteed summer attraction.
The Tre Cime road and public transport are seasonal.
In 2026 the Dobbiaco-Rifugio Auronzo shuttle ran until 11 October, so later in the month you need the toll road or a tour. The toll road up to Rifugio Auronzo usually stays open until the end of October, but it closes whenever there is snow or ice.
After seasonal transport ends, access can become more complicated and weather-dependent.
If Tre Cime is your number-one priority, choose early October, not late October.
Can you hike the Tre Cime circuit in October?
Yes in dry, snow-free conditions, particularly earlier in the month.
But the route is at high altitude.
If fresh snow, ice or poor visibility is present, the normal summer hiking description no longer tells the full story.
Check:
- current trail conditions
- road or shuttle access
- weather
- hut openings
- daylight
before leaving. Our Tre Cime tours page covers access in September and October.
Is Lago di Braies open in October?
Yes.
Lago di Braies is one of the easiest famous Dolomites attractions to include in October because you do not need a cable car to reach it.
The summer traffic restrictions that apply from 1 July to 15 September are no longer an issue in October.
That makes the lake simpler to visit by car.
Can you walk around Lago di Braies in October?
Usually, yes, in suitable conditions.
The full lake circuit is around 3.6 km.
However, frost, snow or wet leaves can make sections slippery.
If conditions are poor, you can still enjoy the lake without completing the entire circuit.
Are the boats running in October?
For 2026, the published Lago di Braies rowing-boat season continues through 1 November, with reduced autumn hours.
Operations remain weather-dependent.
If the boat ride is important, check the operator’s current status before making a long detour. Our Lago di Braies guide covers the lake walk, parking and boats in more detail.
Is Lago di Misurina worth visiting in October?
Yes.
Misurina is one of the best October stops because it does not depend heavily on lift infrastructure.
You can:
- walk around part of the lake
- enjoy mountain views
- combine it with Cortina
- continue towards Tre Cime when accessible
- use it as a photography stop
It is particularly useful in late October, when higher attractions become less predictable.
Is Cortina good in October?
Yes.
Cortina is arguably one of the safest bases for an October Dolomites trip.
Why?
Because it is a real town, not just a seasonal trailhead.
Even as lifts begin closing, you still have:
- restaurants
- shops
- hotels
- road access
- nearby lakes
- mountain passes
- lower walks
- day-trip options
The 2026 Cortina summer lift season continues through 18 October, which makes the first half of the month particularly attractive.
After that date, Cortina still works well as a road-trip base.
Is Val Gardena good in October?
Yes, especially if Seceda or Alpe di Siusi is a priority.
Val Gardena keeps more lifts running into late October than many other Dolomites areas.
That makes Ortisei a useful base if you want:
- Seceda
- Alpe di Siusi
- easy lift-assisted walks
- autumn photography
- village access without relying entirely on a car
If you are travelling after mid-October, Val Gardena may offer more usable lift infrastructure than Cortina.
Best places to visit in October
1. Seceda
One of the best high-viewpoint options because lift access continues through the month in 2026.
2. Lago di Braies
Easy road access, beautiful autumn atmosphere and no need for a major hike.
3. Lago di Misurina
A practical scenic stop with minimal planning.
4. Cortina d’Ampezzo
Strong base for eastern Dolomites road trips.
5. Passo Falzarego
Excellent mountain road scenery and access to Lagazuoi while the cable car is operating.
6. Alpe di Siusi
One of the best western-Dolomites areas for gentler autumn walking.
7. Val di Funes
Excellent for golden larches, villages and photography.
8. Passo Gardena
One of the classic Dolomites driving routes, weather permitting.
9. Lago di Carezza
Easy to include in a western Dolomites road trip.
10. Ortisei
Useful as a base even when weather makes high routes less appealing.
Best hikes in the Dolomites in October
Choose October hikes by current conditions. A famous name is no guide to what a trail is like this week.
Seceda
One of the best options because you can use the lift and adjust the walking distance.
Alpe di Siusi
Good for gentler trails and broad open scenery.
Lago di Braies circuit
A good easy walk if paths are clear.
Cinque Torri
Excellent in early October while the chairlift remains open.
After the lift closes, walking access requires more effort.
Lagazuoi
Useful through mid-October while the cable car runs.
The upper area gives you high views without a major ascent.
Val di Funes trails
Lower routes around the Odle group can be strong autumn choices.
Tre Cime
Best treated as an early-October option unless current conditions clearly support a later visit.
Our best hikes in the Dolomites guide has the full route details for each of these.
Hikes we would be more cautious about in October
Lago di Sorapis
The standard trail includes exposed sections and fixed cables.
Dry summer conditions matter.
If there is ice or snow, this is not a route to force into the itinerary.
Long Sassolungo routes
These can be excellent in early October, but a long circuit becomes less attractive once snow, short daylight or closed huts come into play.
Via ferrata
October is not automatically unsuitable, but route conditions matter enormously.
If you need to ask whether snow or ice is acceptable on a specific via ferrata, ask a local guide instead of relying on a generic article.
Best road trips in October
This is where October becomes particularly strong.
A road trip remains enjoyable even as lift infrastructure contracts.
Cortina loop
A simple eastern Dolomites road trip can include:
- Cortina
- Lago di Misurina
- Passo Falzarego
- Passo Valparola
- scenic viewpoints
This route works especially well in early and mid-October.
Great Dolomites Road section
In the western and central Dolomites, you can plan a route through:
- Val Gardena
- Passo Gardena
- Passo Sella
- Val di Fassa
- Lago di Carezza
Weather permitting, this is one of the best ways to experience the landscape without depending on hiking lifts.
Val di Funes day
For a slower photography-focused day:
- explore villages
- walk lower trails
- photograph the Odle peaks
- combine with nearby South Tyrol towns
This works especially well later in the month.
Are the mountain passes open in October?
Often, yes.
Major Dolomites passes usually remain open unless weather or snow forces temporary closures.
But October is exactly when you should stop treating them as guaranteed.
Before driving a high pass, check:
- local road conditions
- snowfall
- overnight temperatures
- temporary closures
- winter-equipment requirements
A road can be clear one day and affected by fresh snow the next.
Driving in the Dolomites in October
Driving is usually straightforward in good weather.
The biggest changes from summer are:
- colder mornings
- possible frost
- fewer daylight hours
- wet leaves
- early snow
- reduced services on quieter roads
If you rent a car, make sure it is appropriately equipped for the season and area.
Do not assume that conditions in Venice or Verona tell you what the mountain roads will be like.
Do you need winter tyres in October?
Rules depend on the road, province and dates, and they can change.
In northern Italy, winter-equipment obligations apply on many roads from autumn into spring.
If you are renting, ask the rental company whether the vehicle comes with the legally required seasonal equipment for your route and travel dates.
Do not leave this until you encounter snow.
Autumn colours in October
October is the strongest month for classic Dolomites autumn colour.
The star is the larch, which turns gold before dropping its needles.
Good areas for larches include:
- Val di Funes
- Alpe di Siusi
- Val Gardena
- Cortina valleys
- Passo delle Erbe
- eastern South Tyrol
Colour timing is not identical every year.
Altitude, temperature, rain and wind all affect when foliage peaks.
If autumn colour is your priority, plan a route covering several elevations instead of chasing one exact location. Our autumn foliage tours page covers where the larches are on the routes from Venice.
What are the crowds like?
October is much quieter than July or August.
You can still encounter busy conditions:
- at Lago di Braies on sunny weekends
- on Seceda while the lift is operating
- in Cortina during events
- at major roadside viewpoints
But the pressure is very different from peak summer.
This is one of October’s biggest advantages.
What closes in October?
Expect closures among:
- mountain huts
- chairlifts
- cable cars
- seasonal buses
- high-altitude restaurants
- tourist attractions tied to summer operations
Closures happen gradually.
This is why a trip from 2-7 October may feel very different from one from 24-29 October.
Are mountain huts open in October?
Some are.
Many close in late September or early October, while others remain open longer if they are accessible by lift or road.
Do not assume a hut shown on a hiking map is serving food.
If your route depends on it for:
- lunch
- water
- shelter
- toilets
check directly.
For later October hikes, carry more food and water than you might in July.
Is October a good month for photography?
Yes, one of the best.
October gives you:
- golden forests
- lower sun
- quieter viewpoints
- possible fresh snow on peaks
- atmospheric clouds
- easier roadside stopping
Good photography areas include:
- Seceda
- Val di Funes
- Alpe di Siusi
- Lago di Braies
- Misurina
- Passo Gardena
- Cortina
- Falzarego
The ideal combination is often autumn colour lower down with fresh snow higher on the peaks. Our autumn photography tours page covers sunrise and golden-hour options.
Sunrise and sunset considerations
Days become noticeably shorter through October.
That affects hiking more than many visitors expect.
A route that was comfortable in August may require a much earlier start in October.
For long walks:
- know sunset time
- add margin
- carry a headlamp
- do not depend on the final cable car unless you know its operating time
Late October especially is not the month to begin a long route after lunch.
What should you pack?
For a normal October road trip:
- waterproof jacket
- warm mid-layer
- hat
- gloves
- comfortable walking shoes
- water
- sunglasses
- sun protection
- power bank
For hiking:
- proper hiking shoes or boots
- extra warm layer
- gloves
- hat
- food
- water
- offline navigation
- headlamp
- traction equipment only where conditions and route justify it
The key is layers.
A sunny lakeside stop and an exposed 2,500-metre ridge can feel like different seasons.
Best base in October
Cortina d’Ampezzo
Best for:
- eastern Dolomites
- Misurina
- Falzarego
- early October Tre Cime plans
- Cinque Torri
- scenic driving
Ortisei
Best for:
- Seceda
- Alpe di Siusi
- later-October lift access
- western Dolomites
Dobbiaco
Best for:
- Lago di Braies
- Tre Cime region
- public transport
- eastern South Tyrol
San Candido
Good for:
- a more town-based stay
- easy access to the eastern South Tyrol Dolomites
- combining mountain scenery with cafés and lower walks
Early October itinerary: 3 days
Day 1: Tre Cime and Misurina
Use a clear day while seasonal access is still operating.
Day 2: Cortina, Cinque Torri and Falzarego
Use the 5 Torri lift while it is still open.
Day 3: Lago di Braies and Dobbiaco
Keep this day easier.
This is the version of October that still feels closest to a summer hiking trip.
Mid-October itinerary: 3 days
Day 1: Lagazuoi and Falzarego
Use the cable car while it remains in operation.
Day 2: Lago di Braies and Misurina
Plan the day around road-accessible scenery.
Day 3: Cortina and a lower walk
Choose the trail based on current conditions.
This itinerary does not depend on every summer lift being available.
Late October itinerary: 3 days
For late October, shift west.
Day 1: Seceda
Use the Ortisei-Furnes-Seceda lifts if weather and operations allow.
Day 2: Alpe di Siusi
Choose a gentle walk and enjoy the autumn landscape.
Day 3: Val di Funes or Lago di Carezza
Use this as a road-trip and photography day.
This usually works better than trying to recreate an early-October Cortina hiking itinerary after most lifts have closed.
Can you visit the Dolomites from Venice in October?
Yes.
October can be a very good month for a Venice-to-Dolomites road trip because traffic is generally lighter.
A simple day could include:
- Cortina
- Misurina
- Falzarego
- one short walk
If Tre Cime is the main target, early October is safer because seasonal access becomes more limited later.
If you are travelling later in the month, a sightseeing route around Cortina may be better than a Tre Cime-dependent itinerary.
Without a car, a guided day trip covers much the same ground and needs no lifts. The Best of the Dolomites day trip from Venice, rated 4.7/5 from more than 900 reviews, is a coach day with two hours at Lake Misurina and about seventy minutes in Cortina, and it had dates to 31 October when we checked its calendar in September 2026. The small-group minivan tours, such as the Cortina and Lake Braies day trip, continue into November. Our Dolomites in October tours page compares what still runs week by week, and the Venice to the Dolomites guide weighs a tour against self-drive and the bus.
Is October better than September?
Choose September if:
- hiking is the main reason for your trip
- you want maximum lift and hut availability
- you want longer days
- you are doing your first major Dolomites trip
Choose October if:
- autumn colour matters
- you want fewer crowds
- photography is important
- you enjoy scenic driving
- you can adapt plans around weather
September is easier; see our Dolomites in September guide.
October can be more atmospheric.
Is October better than November?
For most visitors, yes.
October still offers:
- more lifts
- more huts
- more hiking options
- longer days
- less chance of persistent snow
November is much more clearly off-season.
If you are deciding between the two for a first trip, October is normally the better choice. Our Dolomites in November page covers what still runs once the lifts stop, and our Dolomites in November guide covers the weather and what stays open.
Common October planning mistakes
Treating the whole month as one season
1 October and 31 October are very different planning dates.
Assuming every lift follows the same schedule
They do not.
Always check the specific lift.
Planning only high-altitude hikes
Keep lakes, lower walks and road-trip days available.
Forgetting about shorter daylight
Long hikes need earlier starts.
Assuming snow means the whole trip is ruined
Fresh snow can close one route while making roadside scenery even more beautiful.
Assuming a closed lift means the destination is closed
Sometimes you can still walk there, but the route becomes longer and more demanding.
Frequently asked questions
Is October too late for the Dolomites?
No. October can be excellent, particularly for road trips, photography and autumn scenery.

Yes. It is one of the strongest months for scenic driving if mountain passes remain clear.
Are the Dolomites crowded in October?
Generally much less than July and August, although famous attractions can still be busy on sunny weekends.
Should I visit in early or late October?
Choose early October if hiking and lifts matter. Choose late October if you prioritise autumn scenery, quieter travel and road trips.
Final planning advice
October is one of the most rewarding months in the Dolomites if you stop trying to make it behave like July.
In early October, use the remaining lift network and enjoy classic hikes with fewer people.
In mid-October, mix lift-assisted mountain days with lakes and scenic driving.
In late October, move towards destinations that still have operating lifts or that do not need lifts at all.
For 2026, that means places such as Seceda and Alpe di Siusi become particularly useful later in the month, while many Cortina lifts finish by mid-October.
Keep one rule in mind:
Plan around what is open on your exact dates, not around a generic list of the best things to do in the Dolomites.
If the weather turns, switch a high hike for a lake, a mountain pass or a valley walk.
That flexibility is not a backup plan.
In October, it is the best way to experience the Dolomites.
