Lake Garda to the Dolomites: Day Trip, Driving Routes & Tours
Planning a Dolomites day trip from Lake Garda? Compare routes from Riva, Garda, Sirmione and Desenzano, including self-drive options, coach tours and the Brenta Dolomites.
A day trip from Lake Garda to the Dolomites is possible, but the answer changes dramatically depending on where around Lake Garda you are staying. From Riva del Garda or Torbole, the mountains are already close and the Brenta Dolomites are an easy target for a day trip.
Check Availability
From Garda, Bardolino, Lazise, Peschiera, Sirmione or Desenzano, you are starting much farther south. A full-day excursion to the classic Dolomites around Passo Pordoi, Val di Fassa and Ortisei is still realistic, but it becomes a long sightseeing day, not a quick mountain escape.
That distinction matters because Lake Garda is more than 50 km long. “Lake Garda to the Dolomites” is not one route.
For most visitors, there are three sensible options:
- Brenta Dolomites from northern Lake Garda for the shortest and easiest mountain day
- Passo Pordoi and Val di Fassa for the classic high Dolomites road-trip experience
- An organised coach tour if you are staying on the southern or eastern shores and do not want to drive
The coach tours are summer tours. When we read the Lake Garda coach tour’s calendar in September 2026, its last date was 9 October, so check the calendar above for your dates before planning around one. The sections below compare the routes, realistic day-trip plans, the transport options and which part of the Dolomites suits each Lake Garda base.
Lake Garda to the Dolomites at a glance
| Starting area | Best Dolomites target | Best transport | Day trip practical? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Riva del Garda / Torbole | Brenta Dolomites, Madonna di Campiglio | Car or seasonal shuttle | Very practical |
| Malcesine | Val di Fassa / Passo Pordoi or Brenta | Car | Practical with early start |
| Garda / Bardolino / Lazise | Passo Pordoi / Ortisei | Car or organised coach | Long but realistic |
| Peschiera / Sirmione / Desenzano | Passo Pordoi / Val Gardena | Organised coach or car | Full-day excursion |
| North Lake Garda | Central Dolomites road trip | Car | Best independent option |
The most important planning decision is whether you want the closest Dolomites or the most famous classic Dolomites scenery.
They are not necessarily the same trip.
Are the Dolomites close to Lake Garda?
The Dolomites begin surprisingly close to the northern end of Lake Garda.
Riva del Garda sits in Trentino, with the Brenta Dolomites to the north-west and the central Dolomites to the north-east.
From the southern shore, however, you first have to travel most of the length of the lake or use the motorway before the mountain day begins.
That is why two travellers can both say they are “staying at Lake Garda” and face very different journeys.
From Riva del Garda
You are well positioned for:
- Madonna di Campiglio
- Pinzolo
- Brenta Dolomites
- Molveno
- Val di Fassa with a longer drive
From Sirmione or Desenzano
The Brenta Dolomites are considerably farther away, while organised tours often use the motorway towards Trento/Bolzano before entering the Dolomites around Val di Fiemme, Val di Fassa, Passo Pordoi and Val Gardena.
Which Dolomites should you visit from Lake Garda?
For a one-day trip, we would choose between two main regions.
Option 1: Brenta Dolomites
Choose the Brenta Dolomites if:
- you are staying in Riva or Torbole
- you want the shortest travel time
- hiking or cable cars are the priority
- you would prefer more time in the mountains and less on the road
- Madonna di Campiglio appeals to you
The Brenta Dolomites are a UNESCO-listed Dolomite group west of the Adige Valley.
They are geographically separate from famous eastern Dolomites destinations such as Cortina and Tre Cime, but they are very much part of the Dolomites.
From northern Lake Garda, they make excellent day-trip sense.
Option 2: Val di Fassa, Passo Pordoi and Val Gardena
Choose the central/western Dolomites if:
- Passo Pordoi is on your list
- you want the classic high-pass scenery
- you want to see Ortisei or Val Gardena
- you are taking an organised Lake Garda coach excursion
- you do not mind a long day
This is the route most “Dolomites from Lake Garda” sightseeing tours follow.
The full-day coach tour from Lake Garda, for example, travels through Val di Fiemme, Moena and Canazei, stops for about two hours at Passo Pordoi, then continues to Ortisei in Val Gardena for about 45 minutes before returning towards Lake Garda via Bolzano.
That gives you a broad introduction to the Dolomites in one day, but it also means a lot of time on the road.
What about Cortina and Tre Cime?
We would not choose Cortina or Tre Cime for a normal Lake Garda day trip.
They are too far east to be the most efficient use of one day from Garda.
If Tre Cime is a must-see, stay overnight in the eastern Dolomites.
The same applies to Lago di Braies.
These places combine much more naturally with:
- Cortina
- Venice
- Dobbiaco
- San Candido
See our Venice to the Dolomites guide if the eastern Dolomites are your priority, and the Lago di Braies guide for the lake itself.
Dolomites from Riva del Garda
Riva is the strongest Lake Garda base for mountain day trips.
You have two very different options:
- head north-west into the Brenta Dolomites
- head north-east towards Val di Fassa and the central Dolomites
For one day, we prefer the Brenta option unless Passo Pordoi or Val Gardena is specifically on your wish list.
Riva del Garda to the Brenta Dolomites
The Brenta Dolomites are close enough to make the day feel relaxed, not rushed.
A typical route goes north from Garda Trentino through the Sarca Valley towards:
- Ponte Arche
- Pinzolo
- Madonna di Campiglio
From there, cable cars give access to high mountain terrain during the operating season.
Why this route works
You are not trying to cross half of northern Italy before seeing the mountains.
That gives you time for:
- a cable-car ride
- a proper walk
- lunch in a mountain hut
- time in Madonna di Campiglio
- a relaxed return to Riva
For travellers who want a mountain day spent on foot, not a panorama through a coach window, this is one of the best choices.
The Brenta side also has a few small guided activities. The guided three-lakes e-bike tour from Molveno has been withdrawn from GetYourGuide. A simpler way in is the Lake Molveno day with honey and liqueur tastings, a TUI day trip listed under Limone sul Garda to the lake under the Brenta Dolomites, with a distillery visit and free time by the water, from $95 per person. It has no reviews yet.
2026 Dolomiti Garda Express
In summer 2026, the Dolomiti Garda Express ran a direct seasonal bus from Garda Trentino to the Brenta Dolomites.
It ran on Thursdays from 18 June to 17 September 2026, so the 2026 season is over; check Visit Trentino for next summer’s dates.
The published 2026 departure times were:
- Torbole: 08:30
- Riva del Garda: 08:45
- Arco: 08:55
The bus reached:
- Pinzolo around 10:05
- Madonna di Campiglio around 10:40
The return left Madonna di Campiglio at 16:30 and was back at Torbole at around 18:35, passing Riva shortly before.
The published base price for 2026 was €55.
This is especially useful if you are staying in northern Lake Garda without a rental car.
Cable-car operating periods differ, so check which lifts are included or running on your chosen date.
Riva del Garda to Madonna di Campiglio
Madonna di Campiglio is one of the easiest high-profile mountain resorts to pair with Lake Garda.
Once there, you can:
- use the Spinale cable car
- use Pradalago
- head towards Grostè
- take shorter alpine walks
- spend time in town
- stop at a rifugio
Choose the lift by:
- weather
- operating dates
- how much walking you want
- whether views or hiking are the priority
Do not try to use every cable car in one day.
Choose one mountain area and enjoy it.
Riva del Garda to Val di Fassa
Val di Fassa is farther than Madonna di Campiglio but still realistic by car.
This route makes sense if you want:
- Moena
- Canazei
- Passo Pordoi
- Passo Sella
- the Sella group
For a one-day trip, we would choose one major pass plus one valley stop, not the entire Sella Ronda, unless driving itself is the main attraction.
Dolomites from Malcesine
Malcesine is one of the most popular bases on eastern Lake Garda.
It sits farther south than Riva but still gives you a reasonable starting point for the mountains.
The main problem is that Lake Garda roads can be slow.
A route that looks short on a map may involve:
- lake traffic
- tunnels
- narrow sections
- summer congestion
Start early.
Best option from Malcesine
For a scenic road trip, consider:
Malcesine → north Lake Garda → Trento area → Val di Fassa → Passo Pordoi
This makes a long but rewarding day.
If you want a shorter mountain experience, drive towards Riva and then into the Brenta Dolomites instead.
Should you combine Monte Baldo and the Dolomites?
Not on a one-day excursion.
Monte Baldo already gives you excellent mountain scenery directly above Lake Garda.
If you take the Malcesine cable car and spend several hours walking on Monte Baldo, you do not need to add Passo Pordoi on the same day.
Treat them as separate experiences.
Dolomites from Garda, Bardolino and Lazise
From the central-eastern Lake Garda towns, the classic Dolomites become a longer day.
The advantage is that organised excursions are widely available from this side of the lake.
The disadvantage is that an independent self-drive trip needs an early start.
Best route
For first-time visitors, a strong route is:
- Lake Garda
- motorway north towards Trento/Bolzano
- Val di Fiemme
- Moena
- Val di Fassa
- Passo Pordoi
- return
If you have enough time, add Ortisei.
But once you add Val Gardena, the day becomes much more about covering distance.
Is Ortisei worth adding?
Yes on an organised tour.
On a self-drive day from Garda or Bardolino, we would decide between:
- spending longer around Passo Pordoi and Canazei
- continuing to Ortisei
Do not add Ortisei simply because it is famous.
A relaxed hour at a mountain pass can be more memorable than another two hours of driving to collect one more town.
Dolomites from Sirmione and Desenzano
Sirmione and Desenzano are among the least convenient Lake Garda bases for an independent one-day Dolomites road trip.
They are excellent transport bases for Verona, Milan and southern Lake Garda.
For the Dolomites, you are starting from the wrong end of the lake.
That does not make the trip impossible.
It means an organised coach becomes more attractive.
Organised coach tours from southern Lake Garda
Lake Garda tour operators sell full-day Dolomites excursions with pickups around the lake.
One typical itinerary includes:
- Val di Fiemme
- Cavalese
- Moena
- Passo Pordoi
- Ortisei
- return via Bolzano
Some operators connect guests from Sirmione and Desenzano to the main coach with a taxi transfer.
This solves two problems:
- nobody in your group has to drive a very long day
- you do not have to manage pickups, parking and mountain passes yourself
The trade-off is less freedom at each stop.
Best organised Dolomites tour from Lake Garda
There is no single “best” tour for everyone.
Look at the itinerary, not just the title.
A strong sightseeing tour should give you:
- at least one high mountain pass
- enough time outside the coach
- one town or valley stop
- clear information about cable-car costs
- pickup reasonably close to your accommodation
Passo Pordoi + Ortisei tour
This is the classic Lake Garda coach format.
It suits travellers who want:
- famous Dolomites scenery
- no driving
- an overview, not a hike
- a full-day excursion
Passo Pordoi gives you the high mountain experience.
Ortisei shows you a very different side of the Dolomites: a polished Val Gardena village with shops, cafés and lift access.
The Lake Garda coach tour to Pordoi and Ortisei is the one most guests choose: 4.7/5 from more than 750 reviews, from $95 per person, with pickup from your chosen Lake Garda town. It stops at Moena or Cavalese and at Lake Soraga on the way up, gives you about two hours of free time at Passo Pordoi around midday, then an afternoon in Ortisei, and the whole day runs ten to twelve hours. If you are staying in Verona instead, the Lake Garda coach tour listed a Verona pickup among its meeting points when we checked in September 2026; the Verona-only day tour that used to run this route has been withdrawn from GetYourGuide. Our page on the Lake Garda tour has the full breakdown.
Brenta Dolomites shuttle
This suits travellers staying in:
- Riva
- Torbole
- Arco
It is better if you want:
- shorter transport time
- independent time in the mountains
- cable cars
- hiking
- Madonna di Campiglio
The two products are not direct substitutes.
One is a broad sightseeing coach trip.
The other is transport into a mountain region so you can build your own day.
Self-drive or organised tour?
Choose self-drive if:
- you are staying in northern Lake Garda
- you enjoy mountain roads
- you want photography stops
- you want to hike
- you want to leave early
- you may stay overnight
Choose an organised coach if:
- you are staying in Sirmione, Desenzano, Garda or Bardolino
- nobody wants to drive
- you want a simple sightseeing day
- Passo Pordoi and Ortisei are the priorities
- you are comfortable with a fixed schedule
Choose the Brenta shuttle if:
- you are staying around Riva/Torbole
- your dates match the seasonal service
- you want Madonna di Campiglio
- you prefer hiking or cable cars to long-distance sightseeing
Best Lake Garda to Dolomites self-drive route
For a classic one-day drive from northern or central Lake Garda, use Passo Pordoi as the main target.
Sample route
Lake Garda → Trento → Val di Fiemme → Moena → Canazei → Passo Pordoi
Then return the same way, or drive a loop if road conditions and time allow.
Why Passo Pordoi?
It gives you:
- classic Dolomite rock formations
- a high mountain pass
- dramatic road access
- a cable-car option
- easy roadside views
- Canazei nearby
You do not need a major hike to make the trip worthwhile.
See our Driving the Dolomites guide for more on Passo Pordoi and the Great Dolomites Road.
Passo Pordoi from Lake Garda
Passo Pordoi sits at 2,239 metres between the Sella group and the Marmolada area.
It is one of the easiest high Dolomites viewpoints to reach by road.
The drive from Canazei climbs through repeated hairpins.
At the pass you can:
- stop at viewpoints
- walk around the pass
- have lunch
- take the Sass Pordoi cable car when operating
The cable car is optional.
If the summit is completely covered in cloud, staying at road level may be the better use of your time.
Lake Garda to Ortisei
Ortisei is a logical target for an organised tour but a longer independent day.
It sits in Val Gardena and is best known as a base for:
- Seceda
- Alpe di Siusi
- Resciesa
If you are driving from Lake Garda and want to use the lifts, consider staying overnight.
A day trip with several hours of driving each way plus a cable car plus hiking becomes very rushed.
If you only want to see Ortisei itself, a coach tour can work well.
Lake Garda to Seceda
Technically possible in a day.
Not our first choice.
Seceda is best when you have enough time to:
- take the lift from Ortisei
- walk along the ridge
- stop for photos
- eat in the mountains
- return without watching the clock constantly
From southern Lake Garda, that is a long day.
If Seceda is one of your top Italy priorities, spend a night in Val Gardena. Our Seceda and Val Gardena page covers the lifts and tours that reach the ridge.
Lake Garda to Tre Cime
This is where we would draw the line for a normal day trip.
Tre Cime is far enough east that the travel time outweighs the benefit of staying on Lake Garda.
It makes much more sense from:
- Cortina
- Dobbiaco
- San Candido
- Venice with an early start
If you want to combine Lake Garda and Tre Cime in the same holiday, use an overnight stop in the Dolomites. Our Tre Cime tours page covers the tours from Venice.
Lake Garda to Lago di Braies
The same principle applies.
Lago di Braies is not the most efficient Dolomites lake from Lake Garda.
From Garda, better one-day choices include:
- mountain-pass scenery around Val di Fassa
- the Brenta Dolomites
- Lago di Carezza if your route takes you towards South Tyrol
Braies is better saved for an eastern Dolomites stay.
Brenta Dolomites or Passo Pordoi?
Choose the Brenta Dolomites if:
- you are in Riva
- hiking is important
- you want less driving
- you want Madonna di Campiglio
- you prefer a more relaxed day
Choose Passo Pordoi if:
- you want classic Dolomites road scenery
- the journey itself appeals to you
- you are on an organised coach
- you want Val di Fassa
- this may be your only Dolomites experience
Neither is objectively better.
They answer different travel needs.
Dolomites or Monte Baldo?
If you only want a mountain day from Lake Garda, Monte Baldo is much easier.
From Malcesine, the cable car takes you directly from the lake to high mountain terrain.
Choose Monte Baldo if:
- you do not want a full-day excursion
- you want lake views
- you have limited time
- you want easy access
Choose the Dolomites if:
- the pale limestone peaks themselves are a priority
- you want high mountain passes
- you want a completely different landscape from Lake Garda
- you are happy to give it a full day
For a week-long Lake Garda stay, doing both is entirely reasonable.
Is a Dolomites day trip worth losing a day at Lake Garda?
Usually yes, if you have at least four or five days around the lake.
Lake Garda and the Dolomites feel very different.
Garda gives you:
- lakeside towns
- boats
- beaches
- vineyards
- Mediterranean vegetation
The Dolomites give you:
- high passes
- alpine valleys
- sharp limestone peaks
- cable cars
- mountain huts
If your Lake Garda stay is only two days, we would probably stay around the lake unless the Dolomites are a major personal priority.
Best season for Lake Garda to Dolomites day trips
June
A good month, but early June can still be transitional at high altitude.
Some lifts and mountain services open gradually.
Check exact dates.
July
Excellent for:
- cable cars
- hiking
- high roads
- organised tours
Also busy.
Start early if self-driving.
August
The widest choice of mountain services, but the heaviest traffic.
Mountain-pass roads can be slow.
September
One of the best months.
You still have much of the summer infrastructure, while visitor numbers begin to drop.
The 2026 Dolomiti Garda Express ran through 17 September.
October
Still good for road trips, especially earlier in the month.
But lift closures become important, and the organised coach tours stop early in the month. In September 2026 the Lake Garda coach tour’s last date was 9 October and the Verona tour’s was 2 October, while a second Lake Garda coach tour had no October dates at all.
If you are travelling in October, see our Dolomites in October guide.
November
Not ideal for a standard Lake Garda sightseeing day to the Dolomites.
Many summer lifts are closed and winter operations may not yet be fully running. From Venice, small-group tours still run into November, as our Dolomites in November page explains.
Lake Garda to Dolomites in winter
Winter is a different product.
Madonna di Campiglio becomes a major ski destination, while central Dolomites areas such as Val di Fassa and Val Gardena operate as winter resorts.
A winter day trip can work, but:
- daylight is shorter
- winter tyres or chains may be required
- passes can be affected by snow
- coach itineraries differ from summer
- hiking routes are not summer routes
If you want skiing, stay overnight.
A same-day trip from Lake Garda suits sightseeing better than a serious ski day.
Driving tips
Start early
This matters even more from the southern half of Lake Garda.
Do not trust distance alone
Lake roads and mountain roads are slow.
Check the pass status
Snow, roadworks and events can affect routes.
Watch the return time
The last hour around Lake Garda can be slow in summer traffic.
Use a small car if possible
You do not need an SUV.
A compact car is easier on:
- mountain bends
- village streets
- tight parking areas
Give cyclists space
The Dolomites are a major cycling destination.
Expect riders on famous passes.
How long should you spend in the Dolomites?
For a sightseeing day from Lake Garda:
8 to 12 hours total is normal once travel is included.
That does not mean 8 to 12 hours in the mountains.
If you want a full hike, use northern Lake Garda as your starting point or stay overnight in the Dolomites. Our best hikes in the Dolomites guide compares the routes.
Should you stay overnight?
If you have time, yes.
An overnight stay turns the trip from a coach excursion into a real Dolomites visit.
Good overnight bases include:
- Canazei
- Ortisei
- Corvara
- Madonna di Campiglio
A simple two-day itinerary could be:
Day 1
Lake Garda → Val di Fassa → Passo Pordoi → Canazei
Stay overnight.
Day 2
Canazei → Sella Pass → Val Gardena → return to Lake Garda
This gives you much more time outside the car.
Lake Garda to Dolomites: one-day itinerary from Riva
If we had one day from Riva and wanted the least driving, we would choose:
08:30
Leave Riva.
Morning
Travel to Madonna di Campiglio.
Late morning
Take one cable car.
Midday
Walk at altitude.
Lunch
Eat at a mountain hut or in Madonna di Campiglio.
Afternoon
Continue with a shorter walk or spend time in Pinzolo or Madonna.
Early evening
Return to Lake Garda.
This is a proper mountain day.
Lake Garda to Dolomites: one-day itinerary from Garda or Bardolino
For the classic Dolomites:
Early morning
Leave Lake Garda.
Late morning
Travel through Val di Fiemme and Moena.
Midday
Reach Passo Pordoi.
Early afternoon
Cable car or short walk.
Afternoon
Stop in Canazei or continue towards Ortisei if time allows.
Evening
Return to Lake Garda.
This is a long sightseeing day.
Lake Garda to Dolomites: one-day itinerary from Sirmione
From Sirmione, we would seriously consider an organised coach.
The benefit is simple: you can look at the scenery instead of spending the whole day concentrating on the road.
A tour that includes Passo Pordoi and Ortisei, such as the Lake Garda coach tour, gives you two contrasting stops and solves the logistics.
If you self-drive, leave very early and keep the mountain itinerary shorter.
Frequently asked questions
Can you visit the Dolomites from Lake Garda in one day?
Yes. The best route depends on where you stay around the lake. Northern Lake Garda is much closer to the mountains than Sirmione or Desenzano.
What are the closest Dolomites to Lake Garda?
The Brenta Dolomites are among the most practical from northern Lake Garda, particularly Riva and Torbole.
Can you do a Dolomites tour from Riva del Garda?
Yes. In 2026, the seasonal Dolomiti Garda Express connected Riva, Torbole and Arco with Pinzolo and Madonna di Campiglio on Thursdays from 18 June to 17 September.
Are there Dolomites coach tours from Lake Garda?
Yes. Organised excursions from the lake run via Val di Fiemme and Moena to Passo Pordoi, and some continue to Ortisei. They are summer tours: in September 2026 the last Lake Garda date we found was 9 October.
Can you visit Passo Pordoi from Lake Garda?
Yes. It is one of the best classic Dolomites targets for a Lake Garda day trip.
Can you visit Ortisei from Lake Garda?
Yes, but it is a long day. It works particularly well as part of an organised coach tour.
Can you visit Seceda from Lake Garda?
Possible, but better with an overnight stay if you want time to walk, not just ride the cable car up and down.
Can you visit Tre Cime from Lake Garda?
Technically possible by car, but not sensible for most one-day itineraries. Stay in the eastern Dolomites instead.
Can you visit Lago di Braies from Lake Garda?
Possible, but it is not the most efficient Dolomites day trip from Garda. Braies is better combined with Cortina or Dobbiaco.
Is Riva del Garda a good base for the Dolomites?
Yes, particularly for the Brenta Dolomites. It is one of the best Lake Garda towns for combining lake and mountain experiences.
Which is better from Lake Garda: Brenta Dolomites or Val Gardena?
Choose Brenta for less travel and more mountain time. Choose Val Gardena if Ortisei, Seceda or the classic western Dolomites are priorities.
Do I need a car?
Not necessarily. In summer, northern Lake Garda has a seasonal shuttle to the Brenta Dolomites, and organised coach excursions collect from several Lake Garda resorts.
A simple decision guide
If you are staying in Riva or Torbole, go to the Brenta Dolomites unless you specifically want Passo Pordoi.
If you are staying in Malcesine, choose between Brenta and Val di Fassa depending on how much driving you want.
If you are staying in Garda, Bardolino or Lazise, a Passo Pordoi day trip works well.
If you are staying in Sirmione or Desenzano, consider an organised coach tour.
If you want Tre Cime or Lago di Braies, stay overnight in the eastern Dolomites.
Final planning advice
A Dolomites day trip from Lake Garda can be excellent, but only if the route matches your starting point.
From northern Lake Garda, do not overlook the Brenta Dolomites. You spend less time travelling and more time walking in the mountains.
From the southern and eastern lake resorts, the classic coach route towards Passo Pordoi and Ortisei makes more sense. It is a long day, but it gives you the kind of scenery most first-time visitors picture when they hear “the Dolomites”.
The biggest mistake is trying to reach the far eastern Dolomites simply because Tre Cime or Lago di Braies is famous.
There are excellent Dolomites much closer to Lake Garda.
Choose one region, start early and give yourself enough time to get out of the car.
That is what turns a long excursion into a worthwhile day in the mountains. If you are still deciding between a tour from Lake Garda and one from Venice, our Venice or Lake Garda guide compares the two.
